Big Bay Slider Action

Floyd and Anthony Hare recently put together a collapsible slider. The slider is built out of PVC drain pipes and can be transported in the back of a van.

Today was one of the first test sessions at Big Bay on the slider, and we look forward to seeing some more slider action in summer.

That last pic is awesome. Nice word on the B&W

haha, nice one carlo, pity the conditions werent great. we must make a flat water mission soon. later man.

Nice to see the guys hitting sliders. Might want to make a couple of mods to it to make life a little easier for yourself.

Have the slider a little lower to the water when you start hitting it, it makes it easier to hit it, particularly if you want to hit the last metre or two as you learn. There is nothing wrong with starting to hit a slider which is only a foot off the water.

Secondly, I would have the front of the slider in the water so you don't have to hop up onto it. It will make longer sliders a lot easier because you lose your balance if you have to hop to high up onto the slider particularly with having to shift weight from leaning back to leaning forward.

Last thing is unhook (I'm sure you work that out already) and hit it at high speed. You can't hit a slider too fast, but you can hit it to slow and the penalty for hitting it to slow is worse than fast.

Wicked,
I'll also suggest making the approach lower and use a section that angles down. Will also suggest some covering on the side cause if you get stuck in between those posts you are going to get nailed.

yeah, shot for the comments guys. the heights pretty good, deff gonna build a 6 metre up slope tho. and on the day was way too hard to unhook and pop on, only had about 15m of run up at best, and got even worse as the tide went out. Pretty much became unrideable after 45 Mins. was thinking of making it a single pipe.with an upslope, how much harder would that be to slide.? Havent been using wax, seems to slide pretty good without it. Doesnt wax slow you down?
yea yeah!

Unhooked is generally not even a question you should be asking - it should be a given. Hitting sliders can be dangerous hooked in because you can get dragged through the slider and knocked unconscious while hooked in. Many pro riders have broken bones and dislocated shoulders on these things. Pipe slider like this is not to bad, but heavy wooden slider will hurt you badly. Not being able to let go of the bar on a wipeout is fairly severe .

You hit a slider bearing off downwind slightly, so unhooking should not be too bad, but you don't want to try this overpowered. I found the best slider angle was around 45 to 30 degree downwind. edge hard towards just upwind of the slider and flatten off and steer more downwind while unhooking at the last minute. Because you steer downwind, you should not pick up too much speed unhooked because you get pulled towards the kite and there is not much resistance against the kite on a slider. Keep kite highish if possible when you start.

Upslope single pipe is much easier to ride onto, because you can hit it almost nose first and then move to sideways and ride up the slider instead of jumping onto it. Sometimes its also easier to ride finless to make the board slide sideways easier and fins not to catch when switching from nose forward to sideways. To start you can ride up nose forward, ride the first meter or two and then go off the edge with no risk. Then make it 3 meters and so on until you ride the whole length. This is normally the way people learn sliders on wakeboarding. If they have boat or cable wakeboarding, go learn the sliders a bit there and you can get basics right with less risk of trying to control the kite or making mistakes.
