Gearing up for the Wave Riding season

At last Cape Town has a dedicated kitesurf-photographer with top equipment, Carlo Van Wyk – and on top of it he has been shooting in some very nice conditions over the past couple of days. Our plan is travel around SA a bit and find some nice spots and conditions for pictures. Ikiteboarding.com will be hosting all the pics so you will have to visit your top SA kiteboarding site to see the full gallery. Our summer season is making an early appearance and we are having our summer trade-winds a couple of days a week already. On Sunday they are predicting 20ft swell 15sec. and 15-20knots – so we’ll all be out ripping again!

On the pic’s you see my new Cyclone Surf/Kiteboard which is 130cm x 38 and 2.5cm thick – it is sick! It turns on a dime and you can hit the lip really hard – it keeps it speed because of the volume, and you can surf the wave. The board is highly recommended - if you don’t mind jibing that is…Ralf Bachschuster is on a 125cm mutant with 3 small fins in the one end and traditional 2 fin twin-tip setup in the other end – but he is not normal and makes everything work….

The spot in the pics is our favourite home-break Kamers at Big Bay. In my view one of the best spots around in waves up to 6/8ft. Perfect wind-direction and a sandbar that allows 5-7 bottomturns so you can go mad without fear of drifting away off-shore or having to negotiate sea-urchin infested apocalypse reef-bottoms.

Hey there Peter, I remember the days of when you used to sail in that blue Cape Ads wetsuit and jibing at Dolphin beach with Goose, Berzack and I on the picklefork! Sheez, that was some time ago!

U still have that Subaru?

Still riding.

Hey Peter

Just moved down to CT - looking forward to hitting Kamers on some swell. I see you are riding goofy on the SE - do you ride out through the surf toeside, or can you jibe this thing fast enough to get in position if you want to hit the lip of a wave when riding out, as opposed to after you've bottom turned. Do you find yourself jibing much on a downwind, or only to give your back leg a break from time to time?

ciao
Ian
