We finally got some fat bombs pushing through and a good breeze at Cape Point. Peter Petersen was down with the flu, but managed to get in a good couple of runs. He was visibly tired and it showed in his kiting, but as usual he never fails to impress.
The waves were at least mast high in windsurfing terms, the water was blue, there was a whole school of dolphins cruising up and down and even pulling into a wave with a pole boarder. Cape Point is a wave rider's paradise, but beware. Huge waves that close out in front of sharp rocks are dangerous territory, or perhaps it is natures way of keeping the masses at dolphin beach.
We'll be venturing out there for the next few weeks, in search for the perfect wave and some more action pictures.
Shots are insane. 3 Q's ~~~~~~~~ 1) On a scale of 1 - 5 (5 being crazy) how gusty is the wind? Most cross-offshore winds I have kited are very gusty, and Cape Point does put quite a bit of mountain in the way. 2) What is entry into the park now? I know you can buy some kind of Pass.... 3) The water looks freezing? Or is it just beautifully blue? Platboom?
Q1: 3-5 on the gusty scale, depends on wind direction Q2: Entry is R35 per person - annual card for all parks available, not sure of cost. Q3: No baggies.....
Yup it damn cold and and an insane spot. These photographs were taken on a calm day, wait till the wind and some decent swell gets in there. Platboom has been called South Africa's Hookipa, but is can get really heavy. Really out of hand stuff, chat to the old windsurfers about it.
about 15 years ago I lived in p.e. (now back in usa), traveled to capetwon a couple times and had a few fun windsurfing sessions at misty cliffs / crayfish factory. Anyone kiting that spot? As i recall there wasn't much beach at high tide, but nice waves to ride!
Crayfish has been attempted, but the wind on the wave is very offshore, especially past the bowl as the wave wraps - surfers not too impressed with us either....Misty's is ok, wave is generally bumby and wind can be good. Scarborough or Witsands on it's day is better.
