Colin Heckroodt in Mauritius

July 11, 2008 | 13 comments
Naish team rider, Colin Heckroodt, has been enjoying the wind and weather in Le Morne, Mauritius. Here's a report from Colin :

June had some very strong days and I had to use my 6m Torch.  There are days when I get up to 7 hours of kiting in and although my focus is on freestyle, I do spoil myself with the odd wave riding session.

It’s my second season here and am staying at Pik Pik again, which is only 3km from the main kite beach. My equipment is stored at Club Mistral so an easy 10 minute cycle gets me to the beach.  The plan is to stick around until the middle of August at which time I will be leaving for Durban for another month of warm weather kiting. I’ll be back in Cape Town middle September and look forward to the new season of epic Cape Town conditions.

On the windless days I bore myself with some golf at the Le Paradise golf course.  I managed a 76 on my last round, a bit of good fortune, I guess, and has set a hard challenge to repeat. I’m very grateful to Mario Devuax, the coarse manager who is allowing me to play at local residence rates. Rates to tourists are R900 a round!

However, it’s not all fun and games for me.  As a homeschooler, I have to continue my studies and so far have managed a tight schedule (I love maths and science!) So to Ozzie, Luke and Jeandre, be nice to your teachers and greet them with a smile. Other than Golf & Kiting, my PT classes consists of cycling and pull ups.

I have been working hard on all of my moves and am feeling super strong and stoked with my progress.  One of the great things about working hard is getting results.

I would like to thank my sponsors and others who have made this trip possible:

Rob from Naish Africa for all my kite gear.
Barry from Reef SA for wetsuits and waterwear
Patrice for  clothing from Rodwy.
Blue Eye for my Specs.
Stefan Smith for WIN health and sport supplements.
Anonymous cash sponsor – HURRAH!
My Aunt Nadine for a brand new Dell 630s laptop
Gilbert from Pik Pik for favorable accommodation rates.
And finally and the most important, my family.

Thanks for the really cool pics and the update - now I can show everyone on this side too. I've tried all sorts of excuses to try and come visit you in Mauritius, but Ashley just says no way I'm going without him! It looks really cool!

Hie hie!!! I'm so glad you've perfected the art of blaming the folks...It does come in handy in life!!

No worries - I didn't expect to be mentioned, but we're very proud!!

My guys in the office think you are crazy, but then again, most Nigerians believe that man was not meant to be on/in water!!

Enjoy!!

Nice work bro, pics look sick, and I'm stoked to see a true South African that's so dedicated to his kiting, it can only lead to one thing, and that's world domination!

By the way, thanks again Oupa Piet, for sponsoring my gholf games for the last 2 months! It's proven to be a very useful alternative to kiting! Looking forward to playing with you at Strand Club again!
Love you lots
