Kiteboarding Sterkies (Sterkfontein Dam)

July 11, 2008 | 1 comments
Sterkfontein Dam (also known as Sterkies) lies between Johannesburg and Durban and is 2-3 hours drive from either of these cities, making it a convenient weekend getaway if you are looking for some wind.

Sterkies is known for it's strong wind - 40 knots or more is not uncommon, and in this instance Sterkies did not disappoint.

Bruce Chrystal from Ocean2Air in Durban recently went there to hook up with some of the inland kiters who frequent there.

It was a great 2 days Bruce and I'm sure there'll be more of the same fairly soon.
Sterkies has got the highest wind average of any inland dam and has the potential to blow
40+ at times, especially August to October.
I setup a weather station there a few months ago and I'll be adding a high resolution webcam soon.
Check out the latest weather and stats at www.ellada.co.za
The conditions are so good there that I'm hosting a speed event there every May and September which is open to both windsurfers and kiters.
The top speed attained there is currently 45 knots, but I reckon 50 knots is possible in the right conditions.
