Jemma Grobbelaar sets record at Fuerteventura; Catellan in the lead

July 23, 2008 | 5 comments
The South Africans are dominating at the Fuerteventura Speed World Cup.

Jemma Grobbelaar (South Africa) set a women's speed record, Sjoukje Breedenkamp (South Africa) takes the women's lead and Sebastien Cattelan (France, Residing in South Africa) is in the men's lead.

Sotavento Beach saw another epic battle today, with the better end for Sebastien Cattelan. Two races were completed today, varying from 20 knots and flat water to 30 knots and killer chop.

It was again Cattelan, Douglas and Roberts who fought for the event lead. Christophe Prin-Guenon is also still in reach of the podium.

Cattelan managed two bullets today, and Prin-Guenon together with Robert Douglas short behind.

The first race was started in app. 20 knots of wind and perfect water conditions. With two extensions it was clear that the conditions improved over the duration of the leg. The second leg was started for the afternoon session then, with the winds picking up to almost 30 knots, and it was again a fight between the "big three" for the lead.

In the end it was again Cattelan ahead of Douglas and Caizergues, who snatched victory in one of his last runs.

Cattelan is leading the event scoring now clearly, ahead of Douglas and Caizerues. With probably one or two legs left it will be hard to stop him.

The ladies fleet saw a new face on the first place, Sjoukje Bredenkamp finally managed to defeat Charlotte Consorti. Katja Roose in third again.

There are alos two new records set today: Robert Douglas managed to to rise his record from yesterday by another 0.03 knots, and Jemma Grobbelaar set a new british womens kitespee record.

Racing continues until 23rd of July. Next is windsurf-speed from the 25th on. The action can be followed LIVE ! during he races vie the Live Spectator. Check www.speedworldcp for updates !

About the Speed World Cup

Speed:World:Cup is the officially sanctioned world tour of the International Speed Windsurfing Class (ISWC) and the Professional Kite Riders Association (PKRA)

The Speed:World:Cup events go from exceptional action in Namibia to more cosmopolitan spots such as Fuerteventura - the historical European Speedsurfing Capital, to huge shows of extreme conditions on small islands like Karpathos. In total, there are 200 to 300 competitors at the same time, from places like Australia or Brasil, to Germany or Norway.

The Tour has to offer: dynamic, thrilling action, and bring the most visually dynamic aquatic sports to the audience, making it a perfect vehicle to locate sponsors logos; a sport that is set outdoors, healthy and environmental friendly.

Superb action on the water, combined with an interactive and exciting life experience, that creates an atmosphere where the fans and the media are face to face with the most radical and intense competition and the biggest personalities of the sport.
Besides being a sport of radical action, Windsurfing and Kiteboarding is a way of life. This type of life is formed by several elements to which many aspire, but that few can really achieve. Most of, if not even all of these aspects of the sport are represented in the Speed:World:Cup.

The Speed:World:Cup is entitled to hold World, Continental and National Championships and is always looking for partners, local organizers as well as national associations, to propagate this exciting and thrilling discipline all over the world.
