Stand Up Paddle Surfing in Durban

Gavin Spowart from Cyclone Kiteboarding in Durban sent in these pictures of him and good mate Alwin van Breda, Paddle Boarding in Durban. Mike van Heerden took these pictures which are simply awesome.

Currently Stand Up Paddle Boarding is taking the world by storm, and in Durban the number of regular Paddle Boarders are on the increase. Spowy's factory have been real busy churning out Stand Up Paddle boards this season.

All Cyclone Kiteboarding's Stand Up Boards are built with an EPS Core Sandwiched Epoxy. They come with a PVC Fin Box and Leash Plug. The EPS blank is CNC shaped and then vacuumed with a Sphere- tex layer and 6 oz Glass so the boards are very Strong whilst keeping the weight Light.

Graphics & Colour Schemes are available as custom designs. The boards have a concave through the nose section for increased speed whilst riding and momentum whilst paddling and the tail section has a pronounced V for easy rail to rail turning.

In Durban the conditions are really great in the early morning with the NW offshore wind blowing. The waves have generally been small (2-4 feet).

Great shots, but i'm still not sure about this SUP thing. Why not just paddle a longboard or mini-mal into those 2-4ft waves?

I had the same opinion a few months back, but have since been converted. SUP'ing gives you longer rides and a way better workout which is perfect crosstraining for a lot of other sports. Doing radical turns is perhaps still lacking a bit, but watching Ivan v Vuuren slicing it up is inspirational enough. Pics capture the mood perfectly - nice one guys

Hey Peter if you want to see just how radical things can get on a SUP, just check out what Laird Hamilton's been doing on a SUP for the last few years. Not as radical as surfing, but you can ride some pretty big waves.

Big Waves?? Check out what Chris Bertish was doing a few weeks back @ Dungeons. Will post in Forum! But he managed to be the first to take on this awesome wave with a Naish 10'6"!
