Main Beach Langebaan was a kaleidoscope of colour and activity yesterday, as it played host to the world’s biggest kitesurfing and windsurfing race – the Resolution Downwind Dash in conjunction with the Saldanha Beach Sailing Club and Gust Magazine. The small town’s lagoon was lit up with a splendor of kites and sails, as a record 320 sailors sped their way from Langebaan Main Beach through the 20 kilometer course to the finish at Dial rock, Saldanha.

The event, now in its 24th year, has grown from strength to strength each year leading it to be the biggest mixed race in the world. Event originator and race Director, Malcolm McGregor had no idea that what was once a couple of mates racing each other for a couple of beers would turn into a world class event. The event is now sanctioned by both the International Windsurfing Association (IWA) and the International Kitesurfing Association (IKA) and points count towards the world slalom series. Resolution proudly joined the event, along with support from Redbull and Voila Travel there was a handsome prize purse of R70 000 in cash and travel vouchers. With the points and great prizes available, the event drew the attention of some of the worlds best sailors such as five times world freestyle champion Aaron Hadlow (UK), Sebastien Cattelan (FRA) – first sailor to ever break the 50knot barrier, Alex Caizergues (FRA) – outright world speed record holder, Sjoukje Bredenkamp (RSA) – outright women world speed record holder, world champion slalom windsurfer Ross Williams (UK), and Ben Moussilmani. There were a host of international riders and a whole spread between professionals, families, amateurs, girls, guys, kids and characters like pirates and team Primi Piatti. Everybody finished with smiles on their faces and the personal battles that went on amongst friends to see who would make it to the end first was enjoyed by all.

Malcolm McGregor, the race director, would like to thank all participants be they competitors, officials, rescue crew, sponsors and spectators for their support of the event. There was some confusion at the start of the event, so until all video footage of the start and protests have been considered, official results will only be released later this week, they should be on the Gust Magazine website – www.gustmagazine.com by Friday afternoon.

Participants enjoyed the evening at the Club Mykonos marina terrace with a fish braai and live entertainment from Nungarin and Shy Guevaras. Special thanks to Resolution for making the event possible, to Malcolm and the Saldanha Beach Sailing Club, Red Bull, Hunters and the rest of the sponsors.

Next year they should have those discs that road runners attach to their shoes for each competitor, you will get exact timings, start to finish, and none of this false start bollocks! It also eliminates the ONE judge taking numbers at the end. Never the less, it was an awesome event, definitely on my todo list for next year again, big up to the organisers and all the participants too!!

It was a great race !! I think that everyone should go to the skippers meeting, then we would all know what was going on.
Or read the notice at registration !!
Just a thought!!

Hi!
Why was nothing mentioned about Ivan and his partner doing the downwind dash on SUP's (stand up paddle boards) in gail force winds and choppy waters! Talk about not for the faint hearted! You guys rock

the event was a complete disaster. there was no correct start so there cant be a winner. If it is a fun event, dont give out prices and money. what a joke. I tried to hand in a official protest but got told there is no protest forms available.

Crazy start, a lot more thought needs to be put into the start to prevent the chaos that prevailed on 17 Jan. For a start, NOT having 50 different hooter signals to signal a start to 300 adrenalin ridden blokes who can't hear squat in a 30 knot gale would be a good idea. I also feel the ceded blokes should have a seperate start, let the rest of the rabble go afterwards. On the whole it was great fun, and thats what its about...

Why don't they look at doing a start like sailing boats do. so everyone is in the water already. Surely that would be safer and easier. From all the comments it looked like a lot of fun, however if you are going to run an event this size and with international recognition then it has to be done professionally. I beleive there were no officals at the buoys and having one person to take down results at the end sounds ridiculous. Again I would suggest having a finish on a much bigger area as I heard of a number of tangle ups on the beach as kiters were not moving off.

Hahaha !! the only tangle was your brother Rob ... you know Brucie !! 100 mph straight up the beach and into the crowds ......and Bachshuster you are such a baby , was awesome fun and will definitely be there again next year even if Lighty Luke beats me again ....

Great to have everyone at the event. The starting procedure, race direction and timing is going to be re-looked at and handled differently for next year. News to follow shortly in GUST. Hope to see you all there next year

GUST did a great job to get the event of the shelves again. But next time the start of the downwinder has to be better, it was totally chaos and a lot of problems with the timing of the kiters as result.

Overall a nice event with a lot of potention to become bigger with more sponsors!

Keep up the good work

Thanks guys. Looked into the chip option. It's only feasible for 1000 + participants, as the cost of the monitoring system is so expensive. The chips are not expensive as all, but with out economies of scale the option is too expensive. We will ensure the start, finish and timing is fun/accurate and safe for all for 2010. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Hey. It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare. Help me! There is an urgent need for sites: Analyze stock picks websites. I found only this - free stock market picks. In both cards, the impossible density to limit as institutional play as intrinsic specialists. With best wishes , Else from Greece.

Please attend the pre-registration gathering and question and answer session at Lagoon Sports on Friday evening. You will be able to voice your concerns in person and we can work towards a safe start for all! Be there from 18:00

Hey. It would be great if we could get our numbers on the wednesday before the race at Big bay or Doodles, like they do for the runners.
