Calypso Kiteboarding Event Results : 14-16 November 2008

The Calypso kiteboarding event was a great success with over 70 kiteboarders from across the country, aswell as a few international stars like the woman’s and men’s world speed record holders, the Spanish, African and British speed record holders.  Our South African champion freestyle rider came to compete and put on a show for us by pulling out some of the top moves on the world circuit.

Friday started early with riders registration and then started the completion with 3 races on a course that was set out. Sebastian Cattalan from France impressed by comfortably winning the event. Sebastian recently became the first person to break the speed of 50 knots on water.

The event’s pace increased on Saturday, with more riders arriving and entering the completion. The freestyle events were completed with Greg Thjisse taking the honours in the pro division.the freestyle events had a men’s and woman’s pro division and a men’s and woman’s novice division. The spectators were entertained with music, splash pools, jumping castles, food stalls and of course loads of kiteboarding action.

The Saturday night we had a party on the beach with two great bands playing (Nungarin and Favela) and then DJ Sava from cape town kept the party going long into the night. Both bands were vocally led by kitesurfers, keeping in touch with the vibe of the event.

Sunday saw the conclusion of the event with a big air/best trick completion. Spectators enjoyed some spectacular high flying manoeuvres as riders attempted to outperform each other. Etienne Lohte was crowned the winner in the pro men’s division, while Jemma Grobelaar took top honours in the woman’s division.
