Playa Copal
Bahia Salinas
Take local taxis, buses, or resort shuttles. Liberia airport is about 60mi or 1-hr ride. Leave the airport and head North up highway 1 to La Cruz. Turn left into towns end to dirt road. 1-mile down dirt road is the kite beach at Playa Copal.
If your staying at one of the local kite resorts you can setup transport with them. Otherwise grab a taxi out front of the airport. Or grab taxi to the bus station.
I stay at La Sandia. It is a kite resort 5-minutes from the beach. They offer cabinas with your own bathroom. Thier on-site restaurant offers great local food specializing in sea food. Nightly entertainment includes: games, socializing, kite videos, free internet.
La Sandia offers everything you need. Great restaurant and nightly activities. For another restaurant & bar next to a nica pool you can drive 10min down the road to Ecoplaya Resort.
La Sandia offers or can refer you to local activities for the fam or a break from kiteboarding. They offer surfing trips, fishing trips, snorkeling, spearfishing, nature tours, nature hikes, setup horse back riding on the beach.
Flights into Liberia average $500 from the States. La Sandia shuttle or taxi is $30 each way. La Sandia living cost per day including: lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner cost $40 to $50.
The wind is strong and non-stop. There wasnt one day of less then 20knots. La Sandia and other resorts offer guarantees on the wind or your stay is free. That pretty well describes the wind.
I was there most of the month of January. The wind season starts early November running through March.
The water is warm and clear. Lots of sea life in the bay: whales, sea turtles, dolphins, fish. The water is choppy due to strong wind but and island in the middle offers butter flat if so desired.
Very few obstacles at the furthest and lowest point of the beach. Never an issue.
The La Sandia team has two riders Damien and Kent. Damien is an energetic Canadian whom loves to party and ride hard. Kent is a team rider for Cabrinha and follows Damien on the hard riding and partying. There is also a local school owned by Nicola at suntoursandfun.
La Sandia www.lasandiacostarica.com offers gear rental and instruction.
www.suntoursandfun.com for the local kite school.
The only donts are rigging too big a kite. For 160lb person the most used kite is 8m. It's windy! Dont under estimate the wind ask before you launch.
This are of Costa Rica is dry and warm. The wind keeps things cool. With lots of activities and beautiful beaches and local towns you wont be bored. The kiteboarding is endless.
The beach is side shore sandy rocky mix. Plenty of beach for rigging never feels crowded. A island in the middle of the bay offers fine white sand blocking the wind chop for flat water.
