Witsand
Witsand Lagoon
From Cape Town International, take the N2 and drive east for about 3 hours. Then you will find a Witsand sign and u can turn right towards the little seaside paradise. its about another 30 min drive to get there.
own car is best. no transport around here. the roads are good.
Barry's Accomodation is the only rental people around, and they have various options for you to stay at. at starts from as little as $10US a day. everything is self catering.
There are 2 shops to buy food. then there is the Breede River Valley Lodge, most luxurious place to stay / eat at. and 2 restaurants.
Not much other than swimming and bathing in the sun, walking, hanging out on the beach, cycling, fishing, whale watching is big here. riverrafting down the Breede River.
Self catering costs, which is not much. There is not much to spend your money on. So, Id say $10 - $20 US max.
During the westerly the windly was deadly gusty - it gets totally blown out then. But when the south easter comes up, its paradise. The wind blows from the ocean over the lagoon beach, and then hits the lagoon. The water stays flat with no chop almost all the time.
We went in October and December. I reacon the summer months are best (September - April)
water is warm. you can kite in the waves on the sea side or in the lagoon where its flat. The lagoon has very deep spots and very shallow spots, so if u are a beginner, make sure you kite with your buddies who can help you. dont kite as a beginner here alone. I suppose the worst that could happen is that you would get blown up the river mouth, so you would reach the side sometime.
Zambezi sharks are spoken of around here in the lagoon. There are photos up in the local shop of how these sharks have stolen the fishermens catch... not pleasing to the the eye. Sharks are everywhere and Im always aware of this fact. This is a fishing village. Just be careful wherever you go.
Not sure about local riders , dont think there are any. But Andre from Barry's Accomodation will put you in contact with any if they are around.
None here, next best place for kitegear is Cape Town.
Yes, as always respect the locals, they are the fishermen.
very big and clean soft white sand.
