Kiteboarding Brandvlei

Worcester
Brandvlei

Take the N1 from Cape Town towards Worcester. Go through the Tunnel, and about 30km's before worcester there is a turn to the right that reads Rawsonville.

Take that turn, and as soon as you hit the town ask the locals where the Brandvlei dam is. It is about 5km outside town.

Bring your own transport, no transport here.

I didn't stay here, but it is possible to stay at the Brandvlei Yacht club. It is on the opposite side of the dam, and they offer accommodation.

The only cost is fuel and the tollgate fee if you are going through the tunnel.

The wind can get extremely strong here. 35 - 40 knots is not uncommon. Most of the times it blows about 25 knots.

The wind is gusty as the dam lies between a mountain range. It is this mountain range that compresses the airflow and creates the wind.

Brandvlei works year round. It works best in a westerley wind (NW, SW , W)

Often in Cape Town when there is barely a breeze and it is raining, I go to brandvlei only to find sunshine, 25 knots of wind and flat water.

Flat water, quite choppy in strong winds.

There's plenty of rocks. This is not the kind of place you want to go to without other kiters being able to help you when you ae in trouble.

On one accasion a kiter rigged his lines the wrong way at brandvlei. He was dragged over the rocks for a long distance and sustained some serious injuries.

Brandvlei is a good place to go to if there is no wind in Cape Town, or if it is rainy, or if there is a light westerly breeze blowing in Cape Town.

This is not a place for beginners. The terrain is quite harsh and unless you bring fellow kiters along, there is nobody to help you if you run into trouble.

There isn't much of a beach. There is a sandy area where you can rig up on. After that there's plenty of sharp rocks. if you don't have someone to catch your kite, either you or your kite is going to eat some dirt.
