Georgetown Lake Montana
Georgetown Lake
Fly into Butte, Montana. The lake is 35 miles from the airport, just past Anaconda.
I would reccomend a rental car or Montana Kite Sports can pick you up and drop you off. The Georgetown Lake Lodge is 30 yards from where we ride. Check out Georgetownlakelodge.com for directions
Georgetown Lake Lodge. It is a rustic log lodge with 11 rooms, a nice bar and restaurant. The love kiteboarders and have created the new drink The WindBurn for us. Rooms are $65 a night, but they give a discount for kiteboarders.
There are 3 restaurants on the lake within 5 miles of the launch site. Also the towns of Philipsburg and Anaconda are a short drive away.
Discovery Ski area is 10 miles from the launch site , snowmobile rentals are available, as well as cross country trails.
Rooms are around $60, but have 2 queen size beds(we have had as many as 6 of us in them when cash was tight. Food is typical ($6.00 burger and fries to $18.00 steak dinners).
Regular winds averaging 15-20, butsometimes up to 30-35. My main kite is an Ozone Frenzy 10 Meter or 11 meter Slingshot Fuel.
Winter! The snow kiting is fantastic. Snow falls every other day refreshing the powder on the lake. Wind is regular and averages 15-20. The season is usually from Thanksgiving to Easter.
Regular powder snow, sometimes wind packed powder.
Watch out for ice fishermen and the breakwater near the parking lot.
Weekends typically have 10-15 locals kiting. Guiding services, snowmobile support and instruction are available from Montanakitesports.com . Gear rental is available. Try Jen's jello shots at the bar!
Montanakitesports is located in Helena (1.5 hours away), but instructors are there at least 3-4 days a week and can be available by appointment. Some gear is available at the lodge (line sets etc.) Call Keith at 406-461-5302 for info.
Don't launch upwind of the break water...winds can be gusty near shore. Walk out about 100 yards to rig up. Roll up your lines if you are going to be taking a long break.Local snowmobilers ride off of the parking lot and can wind your lines into their tracks. Bring an Ice Screw to anchor your kite between sessions.
Georgetown Lake is an excellent spot to get into snowkiting and to rip up Montana's famous powder. There is a 600 foot high hill across the lake for uphill/downhill playing. There are lots of other places to kite within a short distance of the lodge and we are exploring more with the snowmobiles every season.
Walk across the parking lotand onto the ice...lots of room!
